The Ugly Side of Technology: The Internet Is the New Addiction on the Block
Technology is often heralded as a great source of progress and advancement for society. In many cases, technology has been just that. It has been responsible for medical advances that save lives across the globe, inventions that speed transportation and make our lives more convenient. However, this technology has also spawned products that, while useful, can be misused like anything else.
The Internet has allowed unprecedented communication and information sharing across the globe. This technology has and will continue to improve human life. It is undeniable, though, that this same technology has created a new atmosphere that can lead to severe addiction.
It counterintuitive to think that something like the Internet can lead to desperate addiction, but it can. Studies have shown that, in certain demographics, Internet usage per day can be as high as 12 or more hours. This is the definition of addiction. Spending this much of your time dedicated to any one thing has a highly negative effect on your well-being. If you spend that much time on the Internet, you are neglecting both your professional and personal life. You are less likely to socialize or take care of yourself physically, leading to health issues later in life.
This epidemic is even more startling among our young people and children. Statistically they spend far more time involved on the Internet than past generations; even past generations that grew up with the Internet. This increased involvement leads to decreased involvement in sports, music, or other productive activities. Many neglect sleep or studying as well.
If you feel that someone you know if spending too much time online, you should speak to them. First, try to engage them in offline activities. Invite them to a movie, go for a run. If these diversions do not work, you may wish to speak to them about it directly and express your concerns. Family and friends are the best way to combat any addiction, especially that of the Internet.
