The Benefits of Technology in the Workplace
There was a time when phone messages were written on a telephone message pad and placed on a spike on the desks of those attempted to be reached. Mail was delivered to the mail room for eventual routing to the recipients. Phone calls were limited to two way calling and most meetings required travel. We were limited in how we could interact with one another.
With advances in technology, particularly computing, telecommunications and the internet, a whole new range of workplace services have enabled huge gains in worker productivity. The most notable gain has been the use of e-mail; we are now all connected with our clients and personal contacts. We can send or receive a range of messages including simple text or with attachments that include digital images of documents, pictures and video clips. We no longer have to wait a day or more to receive important information; we can receive it in a matter of seconds. Teleconferencing and videoconferencing with multiple participants has become a business standard and has saved businesses billions of dollars in travel costs. Cellular technology as enabled all of us to essentially have an “office in our pocket’ via smart phones that allow us to compute, e-mail, teleconference and text at a moment-s notice. With the advancements in security technology we can be assured that our business and personal communications are safe and secure.
One of the most interesting changes advancements in technology created is our ability to essentially work wherever we desire. This is directly tied to the widespread use of the internet and has helped to give rise to work-from-home programs. Reducing real estate expenses such as office and parking space by relocating workers to their own homes has created huge savings and has contributed to even more to our overall productivity.
